Rug Size Guide
ROOM PLANNING
Choose a rug size with confidence.
The right rug should connect the furniture and define the room rather than float between pieces. Use this guide as a practical starting point; custom dimensions are available when standard sizes do not suit the space.
5 × 8 ft
Best for compact living rooms, beside a bed, home offices and reading corners. In a seating area, place at least the front legs of key furniture on the rug where possible.
6 × 9 ft
A versatile size for medium living rooms and bedrooms. It can hold the front legs of a sofa and chairs while keeping the arrangement visually connected.
8 × 10 ft
A useful starting point for larger seating areas and bedrooms. Measure the actual furniture footprint; bed, sofa and dining-table dimensions vary.
9 × 12 ft
Consider this size for generous living rooms and bedrooms. For dining rooms, add chair clearance to your actual table dimensions before choosing.
Room-by-room placement
Living room
- Small room: front legs of sofa and chairs on the rug.
- Large room: all seating furniture fully on the rug.
- Keep a consistent visible floor border around the rug.
Bedroom
- Place the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending on both sides.
- For smaller rooms, use runners beside the bed.
Dining room
- Choose a rug that extends approximately 24 inches beyond every side of the table.
- Dining chairs should remain on the rug even when pulled out.
How to measure
- Arrange the furniture first.
- Mark the proposed rug outline using painter’s tape.
- Walk around the room and check doors, vents and movement paths.
- Measure the taped width and length twice.
